Assuming that Chesser has actually renounced violent extremism externally AND internally (and there are many people who have)- why? It's not as simple as relative deprivation resolved by needs satisfaction because most of the grievances that ostensibly drove the radicalization have not been alleviated and, in the case of Chesser who is in jail, may actually be exacerbated. It's not a function of power calculus whereby he recants because he is imprisoned and sees no hope for his personal future. There are plenty of imprisoned and tortured radicals who not only hold their positions but solidify them while powerless.What makes a radical change his entire violent belief system? Education? Perspective? Empathy? Survival strategy? Rehabilitation programs (ala Saudi Arabia)? Is there a common variable among those who change and those who never will?Jarret, I would love to hear if you or any of your readers have any insight on this based on conversations/interactions with jihobbyists, racists, etc.
